It’s time for another Classics Club Spin. What’s it all about? Members of the Classics Club select 20 books from their Classics Club lists (here’s mine) and list them by number on their blogs before Sunday, January 21. On that day, a spin number is selected by the club, and that number determines which book on the list the member will read by the spin deadline, which is Sunday, March 3. I am always ready to play, so here is my list:
- The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy
- Cecilia, Memoirs of an Heiress by Frances Burney
- The Prophet’s Mantle by E. Nesbit
- The Passenger by Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz
- The Methods of Lady Walderhurst by Frances Hodgson Burnett
- The Tavern Knight by Rafael Sabatini
- The Book of Dede Korkut by Anonymous
- Weatherley Parade by Richmal Crompton
- The Princess of Cleves by Madame de La Fayette
- Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs
- The Book of Lamentations by Rosario Castellanos
- Love’s Labour’s Lost by William Shakespeare
- The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas
- Merkland, A Story of Scottish Life by Margaret Oliphant
- The Deepening Stream by Dorothy Canfield Fisher
- Tis Pity She’s a Whore by John Ford
- Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens
- Hero and Leander by Christopher Marlowe
- Les Misérables by Victor Hugo (1862)
- Weatherley Parade by Richmal Crompton
I’ve only read five of these and particularly enjoyed The Three Musketeers and Our Mutual Friend. Good luck!
Thanks!
Great list
Thanks!
Well, I’ve only read two of these, the Dickens and the Hardy, both excellent, so don’t have much insight to share! But there are several I’d like to hear your opinion of, to help me decide whether I should read them or not – Cecilia, The Tavern Knight and Tis Pity She’s a Whore are the ones I’m most interested in. Les Mis seems ambitious for the few weeks of the spin! Hmm, if you get Cecilia I get Hester, and if you get The Tavern Knight I get The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, either of which would work for me, so I’ll hope for one of them for you!
I had to put the entire contents of my list up because I’m down to 19, and that’s the only reason I put Les Mis up. I don’t really have the bandwidth to read anything that long right now. Thanks!
The Three Musketeers is still a favorite.
I read it long ago, so it would be a re-read.
I haven’t read any of these… I see Weatherly Parade twice. Is that because you only had 19 for this list?
Yes, that’s right.
