What I am reading now
I bought Klotsvog after enjoying Margarita Khemlin’s The Investigator, a mystery set during the Soviet era. I haven’t gotten into it much yet, but it’s supposedly about the effects of anti-Semitism on a Jewish woman in post-World War II Soviet Union.
What I just finished reading
I just finished a book that I read for my Booker Prize project. It’s Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood, about an Australian atheist who nonetheless goes to live in a monastery near where she grew up. There was a lot of talk about it a couple years ago, but I am not a contemplative person and have a black hole when it comes to religion, so maybe not the best book for me. It’s also going to be very hard to describe in my review.
What I will read next
I’m not absolutely sure what I will read next, but I’m thinking I’ll want to go a little lighter. The next light book in my pile is Roman Nights, a 1970s mystery/thriller by Dorothy Dunnett featuring Johnson Johnson, previously named Dolly and the Starry Bird. All of the original books were named after Dolly (Johnson Johnson’s yacht) and some kind of “bird,” that is, woman, and I suppose that’s why they are renamed.

I remember there was a lot of hype about Stone Yard Devotional when it came out, but it never really appealed to me. I’ll be interested to read your review.
It’s not really my kind of book. The review should show up in a couple of months.
I haven’t read any of these but will be reading the Dunnett novel eventually. I have Operation Nassau to read before that one, though.
Mine got out of order.
I’m currently reading Two Islands by Ian Kemish, set with the Balkans war in the background; involving an Australian war crimes investigator, a key witness who has absconded to a remote Scottish island and sinister forces that are out to get him. It’s not my usual type of book – I was only drawn to it because I love Scottish islands! – but I am greatly enjoying it so far.
I have recently finished 2 Regency romance series – my go to when I need something relaxing – by Mary Kingswood and Christina Dudley and next I plan to read The Script of the Stones: A Short Walk at the End of the World by Francis Gooding, looking in detail at a short section of the Gower Peninsula in Wales. I’ve had a sneak read of the first few pages and am really looking forward to delving into it.

I’ve never been able to get into Dunnett’s mysteries but I am going to continue with the Niccolo books in September. I’m on book 3 but I was so emotionally worn out after 1 & 2, I had to take a break!
The Niccolo books are great! Have you read the Crawford of Lymond series? The first one is a little tough going, but I think they are as good or better than Niccolo.
